Transforming Sanitation: A Project Led by Mahalakshmi & Richa
Mahalakshmi and Richa were deeply concerned about the dire state of sanitation facilities in the school. Hundreds of students, along with teachers and staff, had to rely on a handful of deteriorating toilets—unhygienic, crumbling, and inadequate for their needs. Even the headmaster and teachers often had to share these limited facilities with students, making daily conditions difficult for everyone. During their assessment, they identified an underutilized space near the handwashing area, which sparked the idea of constructing new toilets in that location. Determined to improve hygiene and infrastructure, they secured the necessary funding to turn this vision into reality. With the support of a local civil contractor, Mahalakshmi and Richa oversaw the seamless construction of additional toilets, ensuring dedicated facilities for girl students. Beyond just adding new toilets, they also renovated the handwashing area, creating a cleaner and more functional space for students to maintain hygiene. The project was executed efficiently, minimizing disruption to daily school activities. Their hands-on leadership and commitment to practical, need-based solutions turned this initiative into a transformational success, setting a benchmark for future improvements in the school community.
Hungry No More Project
Our first project was a very special project, close to our heart as it was executed by a high school student volunteer. Two years of diligent work and this is what she did, in her own words: My association with the Government Nodal School, Bangalore began about 4 years ago when I reached out to them to give them books and stationery as a part of the holiday season’s Joy of Giving campaign. I soon realised that the 90 year school has about 500 students and while the Government gives them uniform material as a part of the admission process, most of the students don’t stitch uniforms as their parents can’t afford the tailoring charges. As my first project, I did a small fundraiser to collect money to get the uniforms in place. A local tailor delivered customised uniforms to the students and this encouraged me to look deeper. Most of the students come into school at 8am and do not get breakfast at home as their parents are blue collar workers. The first meal they get is at 1230 when the Indian NGO, Akshaya Patra brings them a freshly cooked hot lunch. But the students are hungry and restless from 8 to 1230 often not focusing in class; I had an opportunity to help and I started a fundraiser “Hungry No More”. My plan after a lot of research and findings was to give each child a Banana, something available locally, easy to handle and delivering nutrition. I used digital media and started to solicit funding from within and outside India. I was very successful in raising INT 5.5 Lakhs to delivery bananas for the whole year, working with a local vendor to ensure timely delivery and good quality fruit. My financial plan included a monthly subscription plan where donors could send a fixed amount every month. Overall the Hungry No More was a huge success as the students were more alert and better nourished to take on the day’s learnings. With nutrition in place, I was appalled and shocked to see the conditions of the 4 dirty and crumbling toilets for over 400 students, teachers and staff. The headmaster and the teachers too had to share their toilets with the students sometimes, making conditions difficult for the staff. The wash area where the students wash their hands, had a bit of unused space and this led to a thought of building new toilets for the students in this location. I approached Amazon Distributors Pvt Ltd for funds and they readily agreed to fund this. With a local civil contractor, I was able to organize the construction of 5 new toilets for the students, 3 of which were exclusively for the girl students. The total cost outlay for this project was INR 5.50L and it was executed on time without any disturbance to the students and the staff. We were also able to redo the hand wash area; The project lasted from May-August 2023.
Health Screening for Women Community Workers
A strong community of women workers play an important role in our every day lives. Teachers, Policewomen, Anganwadi workers, Corporation workers, housekeeping staff, all serve with diligence but do not get periodical health screening done as its expensive and unaffordable. Our aim is to conduct health screening camps buy partnering local doctors and hospitals, to get a health screening periodically.
Nourishing the Elderly: Safe, Affordable, and Timely Meals
Bangalore is home to one of India’s largest elderly populations, with 14% aged 60 and above. Many seniors living alone struggle with daily essentials due to increasing costs and mobility challenges in a fast-paced city. Our mission is to ensure they receive nutritious, hygienic, and affordable meals delivered safely to their homes within a 5 km radius of our kitchen. By providing this essential service, we aim to bring comfort, dignity, and peace of mind to the elderly, making their daily lives easier and healthier.
Raincoat Distribution Project:
On April 7th, Krutarth successfully distributed raincoats to students at AKG Colony Lower Primary School in Chenasandra, Bangalore. The project aimed to support children aged 6-12 who struggle to attend school during unpredictable and unseasonal rains.
The Need: Bangalore's changing weather patterns have made it challenging for students to commute to school without proper rain gear. Krutarth recognized this issue and decided to take action.
The Solution: We procured high-quality, international-standard raincoats that can withstand sustained rainfall. By bulk ordering, we were able to purchase the raincoats at one-third of the retail price. The raincoats are unisex, come with a hoodie, and are available in sizes for children aged 4-15 years.
Support and Partnerships:
- Miss Richa Agarwal and Kriti for their generous support
- IWCBITC, Bangalore, for facilitating project identification and support
- HM Prema of AKG Colony school for her assistance and cooperation
Our Goal: Krutarth aims to establish a sustainable model for providing raincoats to government school children in need. We strive to continue supporting these students with essential resources.
A Heartwarming Moment
As the children received their new raincoats, their faces lit up with excitement and gratitude. Eager to attend school without worrying about the rain, they couldn't contain their joy. The highlight of the moment came when they broke into a lively "pitter-patter" rain clap, melting the hearts of everyone present. The infectious energy and endearing performance brought smiles to the faces of all the members, making the moment truly unforgettable.
